Turners Falls

We are sad to announce the passing of Peter Kari, who died at his home in Turners Falls on May 26 due to an extended illness. Peter was born in Gardner, MA on December 11, 1950, the only child of Stella and Armas Kari. He grew up in Hubbardston, MA on the family farm, where he developed his lifelong friendships. After graduating from Quabbin Regional High School he studied Environmental Science for 4 years at Wachusett Community College and UMass Amherst.

Following in his mother’s footsteps, Pete worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad for 48 years, initially as a Trainman and then as an Engineer. While not a “railroad enthusiast” per se, he truly loved driving trains and had many amazing and interesting tales about his work with his railroad buddies. Before retiring he had trained many new Engineers to learn his craft and was proud to pass along his knowledge and expertise.

As a young man, Pete was a strong athlete – a gymnast, skier, cyclist, water-skier and hiker. Later his love turned to motorcycles and he took many bike trips with his friends and co- workers. He backpacked around Europe and skied in the west as a young man. Pete had many close friends with whom he enjoyed fishing and target shooting.
Peter’s father, Armas, died in 1993, and his mother, Stella, died in 2013. Peter leaves one son, Nathan Kari, whom he loved with all his heart. He also leaves his former wife, Jan Gabriel, cousins Donna Wheeler and Wayne Summers, and his cousin’s children Robin and Greg.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction by Lamoureux, Fletcher, & Smith Funeral Home in Gardner, MA.
