ATHOL - Alan Gray Lyman, 86, of Athol, passed away at his home on March 23. He was born on September 7, 1928, son of the late Stanley B. and Ruth M. (Gray) Lyman. He attended Athol schools and graduated in 1946. In high school, he was a three-year starting goalie on the ice hockey team. He was proud of his nickname, “Red Light,” earned for his ability to stop the puck. After high school, he served in the Marine Corps. Upon his discharge, he met and married Jeanette Fournier. Their children are Pat, Bruce, and Pete. Al was a well-known businessman in the area for over 50 years, being in the sign business and also selling camping trailers and truck caps. He served on the Board of Directors of the Athol-Clinton Cooperative Bank. He was generous to non-profits, including as Athol & Orange Little Leagues and the State Police D.A.R.E. program. In 2004, he was awarded the North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award, as well as the Lions Club’s Rat Race Big Cheeze award. He and Jeanette enjoyed snowmobiling and led many excursions to the Pittsburg, New Hampshire area. Al also enjoyed working on and driving antique and classic cars. Al was strong, healthy, hardworking, and was never afraid to take on a new challenge. He had an infectious, outgoing personality. His wife of 65 years, Jeanette, passed away in January. He was also pre-deceased by his brother, Howard, and brothers-in-law Sonny, Graham, and Richie Fournier. He is survived by his family, Pat and Lenny Lucier, Bruce and Sue Lyman, Pete and Linda Lyman; grandchildren Kate Smith, Jake Lyman, Ashley Marshall, Erin Braley, and Jeff Lyman and their spouses; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Al’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
