BALDWINVILLE - Allen Russell Garvey, 90, of 91 Royalston Road, Baldwinville, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Heywood Hospital in Gardner.
He was born in New York City, NY, on September 16, 1919, the adopted son of the late Allen R. and the late Mary (Sweet) Garvey.
Mr. Garvey grew up in New York and resided in Yonkers, New Lebanon and Wyantskill. He graduated from Lebanon Central High School in New York. He served during World War II as Sergeant in the Army Air Corps from November 17, 1942 until his honorable discharge on March 14, 1946, receiving the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Garvey attended the Albany Business College in New York and graduated from the Gardner State Hospital School of Practical Nursing. Upon his graduation, he worked as a Nurse at Pittsfield General Hospital for nearly ten years. He later worked at the Gardner State Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse for many years. After his retirement in 1975, Mr. Garvey worked at the Baldwinville Nursing Home for two years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #129 in Gardner and the Retired State Employees Association. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in East Templeton and a former lector of the church. He was a self-taught piano player and enjoyed reading.
He leaves his wife of fifty-one years, Carol L. (Lepkowski) Garvey; his brother-in-law, Paul Lepkowski of Baldwinville; his dear friends, Thomas Notsley of Harwich Port, MA, Charles Duplease of Gardner; two god children, Nanette LaTourette of Gardner, Christine Porn of Gardner; his cousins, Mary and Tom Phibbs of Wyantskill, NY; niece, Margo Thompson of New Lebanon, NY also other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, 26 Lake Ave., East Templeton.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon Street, Gardner.
Burial in Wildwood Cemetery, Gardner will be at the convenience of the family.
