Allyn D. Washburn

ATHOL- Allyn D. Washburn, 89, of Athol, died Monday, July 28, in Athol Memorial Hospital, following an illness. He was born In Denver, Colorado, on July 7, 1925, son of the late Herbert and Nina (Dexter) Washburn. He grew up in New York City. When his parents died in the 1930’s, Allyn came to Athol to live with his aunt Leta’s family. His cousin, Ray Dumas, was like a brother to him. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and was stationed in England as a member of the Army Corps of Engineers. Allyn attended the Boston Conservatory of Music. He was a working music teacher and performer for most of his life. He played the trumpet. Over the years, he performed with many local bands but was most closely associated with the Orange Community Band in which he played for well over 50 years. In 1950, Allyn married Nancy Smith of Athol. Together they had four children, Dennis, Keith, Jay, and Robin. In 1993, he retired from Starrett’s (Dept 8) after 43 years. Recently, he had been a resident of Applewood Home for Elders where he had many friends and kind caregivers. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Nancy (Smith) Washburn, his son, Jay Washburn of Springfield, and his daughter in law, Marilyn Washburn of VA. He leaves his son Dennis of VA, son and daughter in law, Keith “KD” and Nancy of Orange, daughter, Robin of VA, daughter in law, Helen Shea of Springfield; his grandchildren, David and Cleo, Susan, Joanie and Mike, and Lindsey and Eddie; and four great grandchildren; he will also be remembered by his many friends and fellow musicians. The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 2, at 12:00 P.M. in Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange. Burial will be private. Calling hours are Saturday, August 2, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
