ATHOL - Alphonse J. Salkaus, 85, of 69 Edward St., Athol, died Friday, October 16, 2009 in the Athol Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Athol on May 13, 1924, the son of the late Michael and the late Anna (Juoconis) Salkaus.
Mr. Salkaus was a lifelong resident of Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1943. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a self-employed painter all of his life, and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Athol. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and his family.
He leaves his wife of fifty-five years, Agatha (Sukols) Salkaus; one son, Stephen J. Salkaus of Petersham; one daughter, Deborah A. Reicker and her husband Eric and their son Aaron of Barre; one brother, Peter P. Salkaus and his wife Aldona of Athol; his mother-in-law, Agatha Sukols; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Albino Salkaus, Joseph Salkaus, Edward Salkaus; and by two sisters, Helen Girardi and Anna Andriliunas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Francis Of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
A calling hour will be held Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol.
