FITCHBURG - Alton B. Hastings, Jr., 54 of Fitchburg, died quietly at his home on Friday, November 27, 2009.
He was born on August 27, 1955 in Athol, and was the son of Gladys and the late Alton Hastings.
"Nubby", as he was lovingly called, was a graduate of Athol High School and a long-time employee of the L.S. Starrett Company. While growing up, his spare time was spent playing basketball at the Athol YMCA. Al was known for his friendly personality, his love of rock and roll music and New England sports teams. He was an avid Patriots fan and was thrilled by the Red Sox championships. He also loved spending time with his two dogs, Gretta and Grover.
He is survived by his mother, Gladys (Walker) Hastings, formerly of Athol, who is currently residing at the Langdon Place in Keene, NH. He leaves his sisters, Nancy Allen of Chester, VT, Elaine Bieber of Fitzwilliam, NH; beloved fiancee, Lori Sparrow of Fitchburg; stepchildren Stacey, Sarah and CJ Sparrow, and was a new grandfather to Michael James Murphy. Alton is also survived by nieces, Jennifer (Allen) Marshall, Amy Allen, Jessica Bieber, nephew, Philip Bieber, and his great-niece Aliza Allen.
Graveside services will be held Monday, December 7, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the South Cemetery, Orange.
A celebration of his life will be held Memorial Day weekend.
