Ann Findlay Williams
Athol – Ann Findlay Williams, 64 of Athol, MA passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 under hospice care at home after fighting Stage 4 Breast Cancer. She was surrounded by her family until her death.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Tom Williams; three daughters, Casey Williams of Jamaica Plain, MA, Jamie Williams and her wife Tracy Lemon of Seattle, WA and Barrie Hufford and her husband Doug of Arvada, CO; and two grandsons, Kalin and Dylan Hufford. She also leaves a brother, Douglas Findlay and his wife Linda of Winthrop, ME; four nieces, Heather Findlay and her husband Tony Pikramenos of Brownsville, VT, Sarah Carlson and her husband David of Belfast, ME, Megan Anderson and her husband Eric of Winterport, ME and Kim Williams of Athol, MA; a brother-in-law Gary Williams and his wife Karen of Athol, MA and five great nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Ann graduated from Athol High School class of 1964. She also graduated from Fitchburg State and received her Masters Degree at Anna Maria College. She was the Guidance Counselor and Director for Athol High School for 28 years, retiring in 2009. She was also the Student Council Advisor for the high school for many years. She was instrumental in getting the concession stand on the football field organized and built. Ann was a huge presence working at the other sports games and school activities as well.
She was genuinely involved in the community, serving 22 years as the Church School Director at the Unitarian Church in Athol. She was also a ten year Charter Member for the board of Athol-Orange TV. Ann was a past president of the Athol Alumni Association and continued to be a member of the AHS Scholarship Association.
She spent most of her summers at a family owned camp on Lake Monomanac in Rindge, NH where she enjoyed spending time with her family and loved cooking for them. This camp was such a special, peaceful place, she chose to hold her wedding there in September of 1970.
Since 1981, Ann and her family would vacation at Ferry Beach in Saco, ME, which was a Unitarian Universalist campground. For many years, Ann, along with Joanne Vennett of Athol was in charge of the children’s program for the Connecticut Valley District. She leaves many close friendships formed at Ferry Beach with wonderful memories.
Ann was extremely proud of her family and proud to have served the greater community of the Athol Quabbin area. She has touched thousands of high school student’s lives and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. A memorial service will be Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut Street, Athol with the Rev. Marilyn Richards, pastor of First Church Unitarian officiating. In lieu of flowers, Ann’s wishes were for donations to be made to the Athol High School Scholarship Association, P.O.
