GARDNER - Anthony T. Safka, 78 of 34 Crawford St., Gardner, died Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
He was born in Gardner, on September 5, 1929, the son of the late Konstanty and the late Aniela (Osnowczyk) Safka.
He grew up in Gardner and Graduated from Gardner High School in 1947.
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree from Boston University in 1951 and 1954 respectively.
He attended Washington & Lee University for one year in 1953. During summers he studied and took classes at Boston University, Harvard, Clark, University of Massachusetts and Fitchburg State College.
Mr. Safka was a teacher and administrator at Narraganset Regional High School for 37 years, he retired in 1991. He served on the Board of Directors at the Polish American & Workers Credit Unions for 39 years, retiring in 2007. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Parish, was a Lector for over 40 years and a member of the parish council.
He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #396, he served as Grand Knight from 1968-1969 and as District Deputy. He was Past President of the Columbians.
He was elected to the Narragansett Regional High School Hall of Fame and the school auditorium is named after him "Safka Auditorium".
He enjoyed woodcarving caricatures and prior to illness he enjoyed traveling.
He leaves one brother, Konstanty E. Safka of Londonderry, NH and several cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 10:00 am in St. Joseph's Church, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, February 13, 2008, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8:00 PM at the Poliks Funeral Home 431 Pleasant St., Gardner.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to St. Joseph's Church - Renovation Fund, 358 Pleasant St., Gardner, MA 01440.
