With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Arthur D. Johnson, "Opie" who left us on January 23, 2025. Born in Stafford Springs CT, on August 24, 1965, Opie was an example of loyalty and devotion throughout his life. He lived with an unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and community. Opie spent his life in service to others, both in his career and personal life. He served in the Military in Fort Knox, KY, in 1985. He worked for the Town of Erving, as Selectman, ZBA board, and a revered Animal Control Officer, initially volunteering as a Dog Officer before being promoted. Opie was particularly proud of his contributions to the Erving Police Department and the pivotal role he played in ensuring the well-being of animals within the community.
His commitment to the vulnerable extended beyond his professional life. For 32 years, he and his wife provided foster care for over 300 teenage boys. An act of love and sacrifice that earned them the title of Foster Parent of the Year multiple times. He was an Entrepreneur and proud Owner of many businesses, Opie’s Country Kitchen, The Drop Zone, Friends Cafe, D&Z Inc. Coin-op, and Owned and managed many apartments.
When not working or caring for others, Opie enjoyed riding his Harley with Family and Friends and recently joined SCRC riding club where he participated in numerous fundraisers. He enjoyed Poker, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, jet skiing, traveling, driving his sports cars, and watching TV. He mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially Holiday gatherings. Opie was very helpful and willing to give advice to anyone in need. He would protect and fight for you to the fullest. He was very passionate in his conversations. So, if you ran into him in the community, plan on being there a long while.
Opie was the foundation of support and love for his family. He is survived by his wife Maureen of 40 years, his sons, Daryl (Justine) Johnson, Devin (Joe) Johnson, Bryon Fisher, Leo (Elizabeth) Bermudez, his Beautiful granddaughters, Penelope Rain and Rosalie Pearl; his brothers, Russell, David (Terri)Johnson, Raymond (Brian) Johnson, Kenny (Shelley) Johnson, Ronnie (Jennifer) Johnson, Terry Jo (Yvonne) Johnson, and Doris (Wayne) Douglas. Close friends Mike and Penny Davis of Virginia, Dondi and Shirley Mitchell of Orange, Tim and Jaime Shufelt of Athol, and Staphanie Guilmette of Ashburnham. Also numerous Aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ruth Johnson; his brother, Tracey; and his great-grandmother, Doris Clough. Opie's love, laughter, and unconditional loyalty will be deeply missed by all.
A calling hour will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, from 1 - 3 pm with a service to follow at 3 pm in the Mack Family Funeral Home - Athol-Orange Chapel, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will be in the spring.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made in his memory to the Montague Animal Shelter
