ATHOL - Arthur L. Meehan, 88 of 281 Cottage St., Athol, died Monday, April 2, 2007 at home.
He was born in Groton, MA, on April 25, 1918, the son of the late William J. and the late Ellen B. (McCrillis) Meehan.
He grew up in the Athol area, graduating from Athol High School in 1937.
He worked for the former UnionTwist Drill of Athol, Levitt Machine, Chase Turbine and the Torrington Company of Orange, retiring in 1980.
He served in the United States Navy as a machinist mate second class from October 27, 1942 to 1945, serving aboard the USS Harry Lee, USS Doyen and the USS Gasper. Serving in Sicily, Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Guam and Okinawa he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with four bronze stars, the American Area Ribbon and the EAME Campaign Ribbon with one bronze star.
He was an active member of the Salvation Army teaching Sunday School and holding many positions as a local officer.
He was predceased by his wife of 62 years, Emma (Felton) Meehan, by six brothers Commander Bert of San Diego, CA, Henry of Chicago, IL, Fred N. of Athol, Charles of Athol, Commader James W. of Athol, Francis "Red" of Treasure Island, FL and by three sisters, Eileen Wood of Turners Falls, MA, Julia Johnson of Berwick, ME, and Marion Zuidema of Springfield, VA.
He is survived by one son, Edward L. Meehan of Athol; three grandchildren, Tina L. Smedley of Athol, Patti-Ellen Nickerson and her husband Shannon of Somers Point, NJ, Kenneth Meehan of Ashburnham; and four great grandchildren Heidi, Nathan, Emma and Megan and their grandmother, Roberta Meehan.
Funeral services will be held at Friday, April 6, 2007 at 2:00 pm in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Friday, April 6, 2007 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Cancer Society´s, New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
