GARDNER - Austin "Ozzie" G. Crossman, 78 of 84 Sunrise Lane, Gardner, MA, died Monday, November 19, 2007 in the North Side Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL. Austin was born in Clinton, MA, on January 18, 1929, and moved to Fitchburg at a young age. He was a resident of Gardner for 32 years, and enjoyed staying in Florida with his wife for the winter months. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan. He was the son of the late Forrest and the late Eva (Chapman) Crossman of Fitchburg, MA. He was a graduate of Fitchburg High School and graduated from Fitchburg State College with a degree in teaching. He also received a degree in accounting from Stevens Business College. He taught in the Fitchburg school system and worked for the former Whittit Oil in Fitchburg for many years. He was the Director of the Head Start Program in Leominster and Gardner area for almost thirty years, and was president of the Head Start Directors Association. Austin served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and was stationed in France and Germany. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #129, Gardner, where he was a past commander and served as finance officer for almost thirty years. He was active in Veterans' Affairs for many years. He was a lifetime member of The Napoleon Club and also a member of The Gardner Fish and Gun Club. Austin leaves his beloved wife of thirty years Ann (Carroll) Morrill Crossman, of Gardner. Also five sons: Austin Crossman Jr. of Fitchhburg; Michael Crossman and his wife Sherry of Ayer; James Morrill and his wife Bernice of Phillipston; Mark Crossman and his wife Leslie of Fitchburg; Gene Morrill and his wife Kathleen of Templeton, and two daughters: Victoria Crossman of California; Sandra Frye of Leominster, and seven grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 26, 2007, at 10:00 in the John H. Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon Street, Gardner, MA. Burial will be at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, November 25, 2007 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. American Legion Post #129 will perform a ritual service at 3:00 p.m. Flowers may be sent or donations may be made to Montachusett Veterans' Outreach, 268 Central Street, Gardner, MA 01440, or may be left at the funeral home.
