ATHOL - Bernard G. Grits, 78, of 86 Forest Avenue, Athol, died on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the Athol Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Grits was born in Athol on June 10, 1932, the son of the late Anthony and the late Anna (Wesockes) Grits. He was raised and educated in Athol, graduating from Athol High School with the class of 1951. Bernard served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He resided in Boston for eleven years and worked as an industrial burner serviceman. Mr. Grits moved to Athol with his wife, Eileen, over forty years ago and was employed by the L. S. Starrett Tool Company as an assembler for twenty-five years until his retirement in 1994. Bernard was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church and enjoyed traveling with his wife over the years.
He will be dearly missed by numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of forty-eight years, Eileen L. Grits, on September 23, 2009; also by three brothers, Lt. Paul Grits, Edward Grits, George Grits; and by three sisters, Frances Archbald, Nellie Bunumas, and Amelia "Millie" Dargelis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 6, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Francis Of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
A calling hour will be held Monday, December 6, 2010 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street, Athol.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
