ATHOL - Brian D. Martin, 79 of 368 Lenox Street, Athol, died Friday, June 8, 2007 in the St. Vincent´s Hospital, Worcester. He was born in Athol, on May 25, 1928, the son of the late Lester and the late Regina (Robichaud) Martin. Brian grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1946 where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He went on to graduate from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in Architechual Construction in 1951. He was a member of the Wentworth Black & Gold Society. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army with the 8th Cavalry, he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in November of 1947. He was a firefighter for the Athol Fire Department for thirty four years. He was superintendent of fire alarm for many years and was Chief from 1981 to his retirement in 1991. He was a Precinct Representative for the town of Athol, a member of the Athol Retirement Board, past member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association, Past President of the Western Mass Fire Chiefs, Past President of the Athol Little League, Past Presiedent of STEBS, Past President of the Athol Boosters Association, Past President Athol Firefighters Association, a member of the Athol-Orange Lodge of Elks #1837, a member of the Edward H. Phillips American Legion Post No. 102 and a member of the Athol VFW. He played softball in the Dusty League for Cetto´s. He loved all sports and was umpire in chief for the Athol Little League and umpired many district and sectional games. He was also umpire in chief for the Pequoig Softball League. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church. He leaves his wife, Virginia (Hawley) Martin; two sons, Richard Martin and his wife Carole of Falmouth, George Martin of Newbury, NH; three grandchildren, Nicole Martin, Christine Martin and Brian Martin all of Falmouth; He was predeceased by his brother, James Bernard Martin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at 11:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday, June 11, 2007, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home 137 Main St., Athol. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Athol Firefighters Association, 2251 Main St., Athol, MA 01331 or to a charity of one´s choice.
