Cedar O. Vorce WW II Veteran ORANGE - Cedar O. Vorce, 77, of 685 East Main St., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002 at home. His wife of 37 years, Antoinette R. (Fanelli) Vorce, died in 1991. He leaves nine children: Elliot Dombroski of Jacksonville, Fla.; Joseph Fanelli of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Roseanne Wrigley of Orlando, Fla.; Mary Marshall of Athol; Barbara Smith of Vt.; Dianne Swan, Donna Fernet, Larry Vorce, and Ronnie Vorce, all of Orange; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two nephews, Robert Bowers of New Hampshire, and Kenneth Bowers of Athol; and a niece, Darlene Chappel of Athol. A son, Michael Dombroski died in 1968. He was born in Orange, May 26, 1925, son of Envil L. and Jennie (Bullard) Vorce, and was a lifelong resident of the Athol-Orange area. He attended Orange schools. Mr. Vorce served in three branches of the armed forces of the United States. During World War II, he entered the United States Army on Sept. 14, 1943, and served as a private first class in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He received the Victory Medal, Campaign Ribbon and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was a rifleman with the 85th Division and was discharged from the Army on March 4, 1946. He then served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1947 to 1953, and the Massachusetts Army National Guard, Company F 181st Infantry Division from 1953 until his discharge in 1956. Mr. Vorce was a truck driver and had worked for Mackin in Greenfield and then for Allstate in Sunderland, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement, he drove bus for E.H. Merrifield in Athol. He was a life member of the Roy L. Boyce Post 650, VFW; a member of Post 172, American Legion in Orange; the Athol-Orange Lodge of Elks; the Franco-American Naturalization Club. He was also a member of the Orange Gun Club, the National Rifle Association, and the Orange Senior Citizens Club. He had a private pilots license for many years. At one time, he enjoyed repairing and selling automobiles with his brother Harry Vorce. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and spending time with his family. Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Officers and members of the Athol-Orange Elks will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home to conduct a ritual service.
