Charles Francis Russell

Charles Francis Russell Jr., born in Winchendon, MA on November 12, 1936 to the late Charles Francis Russell, Sr. and Doris Pinney Russell, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on March 1, 2018. Charles leaves his wife of 57 years, Alice Sird Russell of Gardner, his daughter Kristin Childs Russell of Frederick, MD, son Javan Charles Russell and his wife Natalie Robles Russell of Ashburnham, and grandchildren, PFC Charles Franklin Christy, stationed in South Korea, Alice Izabella Russell and Mia Daniella Childs Russell of Ashburnham. Charles also leaves his sister, Barbara Russell Porter, extended family Virginia & Thomas McTighe, Gail & William Calhoun, many nieces, nephews and cousins, dear friend and caretaker, Amy Jean Goguen, and numerous other friends and family members. Charles was raised within Camp Chanrudoma in Winchendon, MA, and graduated from Murdock HS in 1954. He continued his education at Cushing Academy, and graduated from Fitchburg State College in 1959, where he was also the youth director at the Fitchburg YMCA. Charles obtained his Master’s Degree in Administration from Springfield College in 1965, and continued as an educator for thirty-seven more years. Charles began his career in education in 1959 at Athol Junior High where he taught math and science. In 1966, Charles was hired by Tantasqua Regional High School, and soon became a guidance counselor before returning to Athol as the High School Assistant Principal with Principal, Richard Smith. Charles also served as Principal of Athol High School before retiring in 1997. Along with his family members, Charles carried on the tradition of operating Camp Chanrudoma for decades. Starting with Ten Little Indians, Charles also directed community theater in Sturbridge, Athol, and at Mount Wachuset Community College. As a team with David Robertson, he produced musicals such as Godspell, Fiddler on the Roof, Camelot, Man of La Mancha, and An Evening of Music. Mr. Russell also let children shine in performances such as The Miracle Worker, and The Wiz. Throughout much of their lives, Charles and Alice spent numerous times with loved ones enjoying cookouts and other outdoor activities at the house they built on Sunset Lake. Those who knew Charles admired his commitment, leadership, creativity, and good heart. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Drama Club, ℅ Laura Robinson at Athol High School, 2363 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331. Funeral services are private.
