Charles G. Wirth, Jr. Athol – Charles G. “Charlie” Wirth, 70, of 52 Farnsworth Ave., formerly of Erving died Sunday, September 29, 2013 at his home with his family at his side.      Charlie was born in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, April 17, 1943, the son of Charles G. and Violet (Coleman) Wirth.  He grew up in Erving, graduating from Ralph C. Mahar Regional High School in 1961.  He also graduated from Greenfield Community College in 1973 with an Associate’s Degree in Environmental Science and from UMass Amherst in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Individual Concentration. He lived in Erving for many years and since 1968 has resided in Athol.      Charlie worked as a sales rep for the former Erving Motor Transportation Co. in Erving, a sales rep and manager for N & B Express in So. Deerfield and  Quabbin Wire & Cable Co. in Ware, retiring in 2008.        Charlie was an active member of the Athol Congregational Church since 1983, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, an usher, Deacon and the Country Fair Committee for several years during the 1990’s.  He was also active in Boy Scouts, serving as assistant Cub and Boy Scout Master from the mid 1980’s through the 1990’s.  Charlie served on the Athol Conservation Commission having written two natural resource programs for the town in the 1970’s.  Charlie was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting, but most especially enjoyed spending time with his family.      He leaves his wife of nearly 45 years, Fay Judith “Judy” (Stevens) Wirth; two sons, Stevens C. Wirth and his wife Dawn of Athol and Eric A. Wirth and his husband, Paul Specht of Easthampton; two grandchildren, Xavier and Keira.  He also leaves two aunts, Nancy (Wirth) Fiske of Orange and Josephine (Wirth) Zabko of Turners Falls and many devoted nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kirsten Dawn Wirth, and his sister, Violet (Arnold) Gibbs.      A memorial service will be held Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut St., Athol with the Rev. Dr. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor, pastor officiating.  Calling hours will be Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol.  Burial will be at Locke’s Village Cemetery in Wendell at a later date.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to: Boy Scout Troop # 8, Charlie Wirth Memorial Fund, c/o Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut St., Athol, MA  01331.  For more information or to share a memory with the family go to: www.higginsoconnorfuneralhome.com      $(document).ready(function(){ });
