Clifford J. Savoy Athol – Clifford J. Savoy, 86, of 49 Fletcher Place, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Mass General Hospital, following a short illness, with his family at his side.      Cliff was born on January 11, 1926 in Athol, Massachusetts, the son of Romeo and Bernadette (Lanteigne) Savoy and has lived in Athol all of his life.   Cliff worked at the Union Twist Drill before entering the U.S. Navy on January 10, 1944.  He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on the USS Bonhomme Richard and was honorably discharged on January 9, 1947.  He worked at the Union Twist Drill for over 25 years and proudly served the Athol community with the Athol Fire Department for more than 37 years, retiring as a Captain in September of 1990.  Following his retirement he worked with his son Steve at Athol Automotive Supply.  He owned and operated Savoy Lock and Key for many years.  He served as the Town of Athol Parking Clerk, Precinct Representative and was a member of the Traffic Safety Committee.      Cliff enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, boating, fishing, gardening, woodworking, photography, and working on his computers.  He was a lifetime member of the Elks, Legion, Woodsman Rifle and Pistol Club, and a member of the VFW.      He leaves his loving wife of over 63 years, Sylvia (Smith) Savoy; three sons, Richard Savoy and his wife Joyce, Brian Savoy and his wife Deanna, both of Athol, and Steven Savoy and his wife Cindy from Royalston; a sister, Rita (Savoy) Merkel of Covington, GA.  Cliff leaves 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren with one on the way this May.  He also leaves many nieces, nephews, a very special nephew and niece, Geoff Smith and Shannon (Smith) Robichaud, and his beloved cat Ginger.      Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol, with the Rev. Richard Jakabauskas, pastor of Our Lady Immaculate Church officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery and there will be a calling hour on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to: The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West-6th floor, Brookline, MA  02445-7295.  For further information or to share a memory with the family go to: www.higginsoconnorfuneralhome.com $(document).ready(function(){ });
