David R. Hayes

ATHOL - David R. Hayes, 73, of Athol, died on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.     David was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 14, 1937, to Woodrow and Eleanor (Crocker) Hayes. He graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1955. He graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina with a PhD in Mathematics and completed his post doctoral studies at Harvard University. His first job was at the University of Tennessee. He then moved to Massachusetts and taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was a math professor there and also at one time Head of the Math Department. He retired in 2002. He was a member of the American Math Society and also a member of the Five-College Number Theory Seminar held in Amherst, which he used to attend.     He leaves his wife: Irene (Truchinskas) Brown, whom he married in November of 2004. They enjoyed many nice trips together. He leaves three sons, Robert Hayes of Lakewood, Colorado, Christopher Hayes of Fishers, Indiana, Jonathan Hayes and his wife Stacy of Bothell, Washington; three grandchildren, Mason, Cooper and Margaret “Maggie” Hayes. He also leaves his step sons, Carl Dickson of Doswell, Virginia, Mark Brown and his wife Rebecca of Athol, James Brown of Las Vegas, Nevada. He had two step grandchildren, Courtney Marion and Sarah Kowalczyk of Athol. He leaves three sisters, Sally Stevens of Raleigh, NC, Betsy Hunt and her companion Patricia Davis of Willow Springs, NC, Jenny Lewis and her husband James Lewis of Farmville, NC; also one niece, four nephews and a great niece.     Funeral services will be held Friday, April 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial will follow in South Cemetery, Orange.     Calling hours will be held Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Athol Public Library, 568 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331 or the Athol YMCA 150th Anniversary Fund, 545 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331.   $(document).ready(function(){ });
