David Wyllie III, PhD
November 30, 1933 – March 2, 2025
“An honest man here lies at rest / The friend of man, the friend of truth; / The friend of age, and guide of youth.” – Robert Burns
David “Dave” Wyllie passed away peacefully on March 2. Fittingly born on St. Andrew’s Day in 1933 to David Wyllie and Iris (DeLisle) Wyllie, Dave was fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage and cherished his extended visits to Scotland all his life. A writer, painter, gourmet chef, world traveler, political enthusiast, and economics authority, Dave’s zest for life and thirst for knowledge were extraordinary.
Dave is survived by his sister, Gail Reen, and her husband, Jerry, of Durham, CT. In addition to his family, his legacy lives on through the hundreds of students he taught during his distinguished career in Cheshire, CT—many of whom remained lifelong friends. As a teacher, a member of the Cheshire Community Theater, a Scoutmaster of Troop 92, and a former lay leader at the Cheshire Congregational Church, Dave was a respected and beloved member of the community.
Among the many blessings he treasured in his long and fruitful life were terriers, sunsets from his Maine camp on Great Pond, a well-cooked meal with friends old and new, a dram of single malt Scotch, intelligent conversation, and a deep faith in God. Dave embraced the Gift of Life to the fullest and departed this world content and ready for The Life Hereafter.
A Mainer at heart, Dave will be laid to rest in his family plot in Belgrade, amid the lakes he loved all his life.
