Delbert E. Hopkins
Athol – Delbert E. Hopkins, 79, of 188 Crescent Street, died Friday, January 28, 2011 at University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care – University Campus in Worcester.
Del was born in Neligh, Nebraska, November 10, 1931, the son of William J. and Myrtle M. (Nelson) Hopkins. He grew up in Tilden, NE where he also attended schools. He came to Athol in 1957.
Del served in the U.S. Army from 1948 until 1969 during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Throughout his Army career he was stationed in many different places, did two tours in Korea, three tours in Europe, retiring as a Staff Sergeant. He worked in the Athol area for several years as a mechanic following his retirement from the Army.
He is survived by three daughters; Peggy D. Tambolleo of Worcester, Terri L. Correia and Kelly A. Hopkins, both of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Amelie, Gary, Jr., Ian and Jacob; three brothers, Edward Hopkins of Kansas, John Hopkins of Waterloo, NE, and Richard Hopkins of Getna, NE. He was predeceased by a son Michael and a brother James.
Services with military honors will be at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. There are no calling hours and in lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to: Athol Area Animal Shelter, for the care of animals, c/o Athol Police Dept., 280 Exchange St., Athol, MA 01331 or the MSPCA of Mass., 350 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.
