Doratheen E. Lucas
Athol – Doratheen E. (Smith) Lucas, 94, formerly of Chestnut Hill Avenue, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester.
Dottie was born in Athol, July 25, 1917, the daughter of Harry E. and Winnie May (Colborn) Smith. She grew up in Phillipston where she attended schools, later moving to Wilbraham, graduating from Springfield High School. She later returned to Phillipston working on the family farm, then in 1966 moved to Chestnut Hill Avenue in Athol.
Dottie always enjoyed working on the farm where she maintained a large vegetable garden, doing canning and cooking. She also loved to sing and listen to all types of music.
Her husband of 56 years, Earl O. Lucas died in 2009. She leaves four nephews, Clyde Milan of Phillipston, David Smith of Orange, Harry Smith of FL and Leonard Smith of Polk City, FL; three nieces, Cathy Milan of Winchendon, Clydeen Philbin of Phillipston and Colleen McManus of Royalston. She also leaves her longtime friends, Jim and Karen Fayton. Besides her husband she was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Smith and two sisters, Joyce Milan and Beatrice Newton.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 25, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark D. Bariloni, pastor of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Lower Cemetery in Phillipston. Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol is directing arrangements.
