Doris A. (Johnson) Underwood

Doris A. Underwood Athol – Doris A. (Johnson) Underwood, 88, formerly of 416 Main Street died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare.       She was born March 5, 1923 in Calais, Maine, the daughter of Elmer K. and Lillian M. (Dinsmore) Johnson.  She graduated from Milltown High School in 1941 in Milltown New Brunswick, Canada, later moving to Adams, MA for several years, Greenfield, MA for 23 years, also living in Maine, Indianapolis, IN, Barre and Athol.        Doris worked for Bendix Corporation in Greenfield for 15 years and while living in Indianapolis did service work for the Salvation Army.  She was very active in the Twelve Steps Program through the AA.        She leaves her husband of 12 years, Keith S. Underwood; two sons, Paul Benz of Indianapolis, ID and John Benz of Florida; a daughter, Beverly Scott of Orange; two sisters, Allie Corbett of Cutler, ME and Harriet Love of St. Stephens, Canada; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a daughter, Belinda Benz and two brothers, Richard and Norman Johnson.      At Doris’ request her body was donated to the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.  A memorial service will be held at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Freda Maier.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to: Quabbin Valley Healthcare, “Activities Fund” 821 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, MA  01331.
