ATHOL- Dorothy “Dottie” L. (Kent) Hodge, 100, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol. Dottie was born in Thomaston, Georgia on June 12, 1921, daughter of the late Mack and Lena (Woodham) Kent. She grew up in Georgia, graduating from Robert E. Lee Institute in 1939, later moving to Charlotte, SC where she worked at Charlotte Newspaper. She moved to Athol in the 1940’s. She worked at Athol Memorial Hospital in medical records for 15 years and the Franklin County Home Care Corporation for 10 years. Dottie enjoyed musical theater, had a beautiful voice and sang in many area choirs and groups. She loved the arts, dance, theater and painting. She painted many pieces throughout her life. Dottie loved watching her family ski, every snowy weekend, for years. Her home was beautiful, she made everything she did special. She taught her daughters how to set a proper dinner table, always with flowers, candles and special china. She was a great cook, and was known for her pies, especially coconut cream pie. Dottie’s family gathered every Sunday at her home, always a big dinner, and the children would play and entertain the family. The day always ended with everyone singing and harmonizing songs, especially, “You are my Sunshine”. She attended every event her family had, always present, supporting their dreams and encouraging their passions. Dottie was from the south, she was always referred to as a southern belle, her beauty, grace and a stunning dresser. Dottie belonged to the Curling Club in Petersham and enjoyed attending meets. She loved sharing her Georgia state with her children and grandchildren. Every summer was spent on the family farm, with horses, animals, fish fries, barbecues, and southern relatives. Her family saw the south through her eyes, it was important to her that we knew about her family, and our history. Dottie saw the good in everyone, and always said tomorrow is a new day and a new beginning, remember to look up at the sunshine, and enjoy the beauty of this earth.
