GARDNER - Douglas Robert McCallion, 67, of Graham St., Gardner, Massachusetts, formerly of Pelham, New York, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2010. He is survived by Lee Chalmers McCallion, of South Grafton, MA, his daughter, Maureen McCallion Cohen, her husband Brian and two grandchildren Connor and Liam Cohen, of Grafton, MA. He is also survived by his mother, Edna J. McCallion, of Pelham Manor and Cutchogue, New York, three brothers, Kenneth, Donald and Peter, sister-in-law Sue Chalmers Deacon of Fitchburg, MA, nine nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and nephews. Mr. McCallion was born November 5, 1942 in New York City, to Edna J. McCallion and the late Harry J. McCallion. He was raised in Pelham, NY, where he was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Pelham High School in 1960. A 1965 graduate of Georgetown University, he served in the United States Army with a military intelligence unit, including a tour of duty in South Korea. A huge fan of early rock-n-roll, he had an extensive record collection dating back to the 1950's, and could sing practically any popular song from that era upon request in his rich baritone voice. He could regularly be seen on long walks around Gardner, MA, stopping into the shops along the way and he was a member of the Montachusett Veteran's Outreach Center and Bridge of Central Massachusetts Program. Unfailingly kind and generous of spirit, he loved to reminisce with his mother and other family members about his childhood and adolescence. He was devoted to his large family and friends, and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center Inc., 268 Central Street Gardner, MA 01440-8312, (978) 632-9601, or to Bridge of Central Mass Inc., 291 Chestnut Street, Gardner, MA 01440-2705 where Mr. McCallion was active.
