ATHOL - Edith May (Surrette) Hanlon, 90, formerly of 416 Main Street, Athol, died on Monday, August 15, 2011 at her daughter’s home in Athol.
Edith was born in Leominster on March 21, 1921, the daughter of the late Joseph and the late Ella (Furbush) Surrette. She was educated in Leominster and has resided in Athol since 1946. Edith was a homemaker for most of her life and a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church. Many years ago, Mrs. Hanlon worked for the L. S. Starrett Company, the former Athol Comb Shop and local dress shops. Prior to retirement in 1986, she worked part-time cleaning local residences.
Edith was a member of the Salvation Army Corps of Leominster for many years. While raising her family, she was A Campfire Girl Leader. She was an avid yard-saler and enjoyed gardening, all types of handwork, cooking, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
She leaves two daughters, Edna Richards of Athol, Mary Hamilton of Mystic, CT; one son, Paul Hanlon of Norfolk; one sister, Margaret Carmichael of Fitchburg; two brothers, Joseph Surrette of Springfield, Franklin Surrette of Chicopee; five grandchildren, David Hamilton and Deborah Hamilton of Mystic, CT, Rebecca Richards and Jessica Richards of Athol, Ericca Richards of Orange; one great granddaughter, Allison Belliveau of Orange.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Hanlon, on May 5, 1983; also by her son, Edward Hanlon, on December 12, 2009; and by her brother, Robert Surrette on August 5, 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
A calling hour will be held Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.
