ATHOL- Edna J. (Coffin) Blackmer, 98, died Monday April 11, 2022, at Athol Memorial Hospital after an illness. She leaves behind a son Kent W. Blackmer and his wife Bonnie of Milton, VT; two daughters, Susan C. Muther and her husband Edmund of Athol, MA, Jennifer H. Blackmer of Athol, MA as well as two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, three step grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren. Two brothers, Bernal G. Coffin and his wife Shirley of Daytona Beach, FL and Alan J. Coffin and his wife Cheryl of West Yarmouth, MA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was born in Orange on May 25, 1923 a daughter of the late Napthali H. and Hazel E. (Green) Coffin. Edna grew up in Orange and graduated from Orange High School in 1941. She worked as a secretary at Children’s Aid and Family Services in Northampton for 15 years. Edna had previously worked as a technician at Cooley- Dickenson Hospital in Northampton in the Cardiology department.
Edna was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Athol, former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Gardner and of the Heritage Village Association. She has been very active in her church, serving on committees and working on many church activities. She also enjoyed painting, hand crafts, cooking and reading.
She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Kenneth W. Blackmer; her sisters, Louise LaChance; Evelyn Copeland; Alice M. Crowe and Joan A. Truehart; a brother, Richard N. Coffin; as well as two nieces and two nephews.
Edna’s burial will be held at the family’s convenience at Warwick Center Cemetery, Warwick, MA 01378
Per Edna’s request no calling hours or services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Edna’s name to St. John’s Episcopal Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
