Edna L. Haven
Athol – Edna L. (Sherwood) Haven, 78, of Lakewood Drive, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Edna was born in Athol, MA, July 24, 1936, the daughter of Warren W. and Doris L. (Buckley) Sherwood. She grew up in Royalston, attending Royalston Elementary School and graduated from Athol High School in 1954. She then attended Burbank School of Nursing in Fitchburg, graduating in 1957 as a registered nurse. She and her husband lived in many different places during his years in the service including Pensacola, FL, Norfolk, VA, Monterey, CA, Nashua, NH and Athol since 1968.
Edna worked for the Community Health Service for many years as a visiting nurse and for North Quabbin Family Physicians as a triage nurse until her retirement. She was an active member of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, singing in the church choir since she was a youth and taught nursery school at the church for several years. She was a member of the Athol Area YMCA, Silver Sneakers Program, was part of the reading program for the Athol public schools, member of the Friends of the Athol Public Library, the Gathering Place Knitting Group and volunteered at local flu clinics. She and her husband loved to travel, traveling extensively in the U.S. and abroad, including China and New Zealand as well as many other destinations.
Her husband of 52 years, R. Rand Haven, Jr. died March 4, 2010. She leaves her four children, Dr. Victoria Dumont and her husband Jerry of Athol, Betsy Griczika and her husband Joe of Barre, Robert R. Haven III and his wife Holly of Tupelo, MS and Timothy Haven of Malden, MA; seven grandchildren, Megan and Emily Haven, Evelyn and Nolan Dumont, Michelle, Mike and Mallory Griczika; a brother Tom Sherwood of NC and a sister Lillian Fessenden of CT.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, 40 Island Street, Athol with the Rev. Yoo Cha Yi, pastor officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Edna’s name may be made to the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, Living Memorial Fund, 40 Island Street, Athol, MA 01331 or the Athol Area YMCA, 545 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331.
