GARDNER - Edward A. Buiwit, 87 of 22 Walnut Street, Gardner, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 in the Legend Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner.
He was born in Gardner, on September 13, 1922, the son of the late Victor and the late Alice (Tumapowicz) Buiwit.
Edward grew up in Gardner and graduated from Gardner High School with the class of 1940.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, and was involved in the following battles and campaigns Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, the European African Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Buiwit was a realtor; he owned and operated General Realty for over 43 years. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, and a member of the Gardner V.F.W. Post #905, and he was a member of the Worcester County Realty Association. He enjoyed playing pool at the V.F.W., fishing and playing cards.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Mary Margaret (Bliss) Buiwit; one daughter, Theresa A. Cormier of Gardner and one brother, Henry Buiwit of Lunenburg.
He was predeceased by his son in-law, Rheal Cormier, and by three sisters, Hedwig Buiwit, Mary Updegraff, and Lillian Rydell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
A calling hour will be held Friday, December 11, 2009 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Mack Funeral Home 91 Vernon St., Gardner.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Central New England Chapter, 101A First Ave, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.
