Edward J. Mazejka

ATHOL - Edward John Mazejka, 89, of 31 Wachusett Avenue, Athol, died on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Athol Memorial Hospital. He was born in Gardner on February 11, 1921, the son of the late Frank and the late Helen (Morze) Mazejka. Edward grew up in Gardner and graduated from Gardner High School with the class of 1939. He served during World War II in the United States Army as a Military Policeman from October 27, 1942 to November 10, 1945. While in the military, Edward earned the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and European African Middle Easter Theater Campaign Medal. Mr. Mazejka moved to Athol upon his marriage to Mary A. Robisauskas in 1952. Many years ago, he worked as a shoe assembler for Ware Shoe Company and Orange Shoe Company. Previously he had worked for the former Union Twist Drill in Athol and more recently worked as a grinder for the L. S. Starrett Tool Company until his retirement in 1989. Edward was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church, the American-Lithuanian Naturalization Club and the Franco-American Club in Athol. He was a champion swimmer in high school and taught his children and other children in the neighborhood how to swim. Edward enjoyed going ice-skating with his children on Le Grands Ice House Pond in Athol. He was an excellent gardener, an avid mushroomer and fisherman. He enjoyed going fishing at Silver Lake and the Quabbin Reservoir. Edward was a big fan of the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed spending time with his family. He leaves his wife and companion of sixty years, Mary A. (Robisauskas) Mazejka; three daughters, Ronni Ricker and her husband Elton of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, Marie Winchester of Orange, Diane Mazejka of Warwick, Rhode Island; one sister, Helen Chabot of Gardner; two brothers, Henry Mazejka of Florida, Ernest Mazejka of South Carolina; four grandchildren, Thomas Ricker of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, Melanie King of Wrentham, Amy Klouchek of Tabernacle, New Jersey, Erin Winchester of Athol; his godson, Anthony Tamason of Royalston; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol, will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Athol Memorial Hospital, 2033 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331. $(document).ready(function(){ });
