ATHOL - Eileen L. (Lewis) Grits, 85, of 86 Forest Ave., Athol, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol. She was born in Caribou, Maine on November 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Frank and the late Minni (Tredwell) Lewis. Mrs. Grits was raised and educated in Caribou, Maine, graduating from Caribou High School with the class of 1941. She studied to become a Registered Nurse at the Memorial Hospital in Worcester. She has worked as a Nurse in Michigan, California, and Massachusetts. She resided in Boston for eleven years before moving to Athol. She has been a resident of Athol for forty years. Mrs. Grits was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church and a former member of the St. Francis Women's Guild. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Bernard. She leaves her husband of 48 years, Bernard G. Grits of Athol; her sister, Edna Jonkoniec of Clinton, Maine; her brother, Wayne Lewis of Inglewood, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Donald Lewis, Lawrence Lewis and Lloyd Lewis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Francis Of Assisi Church, 101 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. Calling hours will be held Friday, September 25, 2009 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the St. Francis Of Assisi Church Building Fund, 101 Main St., Athol, MA 01331. $(document).ready(function(){ });
