GARDNER - Eleanor Victoria "Lennie" (Bemis) Erickson, age 84, passed from this life on October 24, 2010. She was born at Emerson Hospital in Concord MA. She was the daughter of James and Florence (Stephens) Bemis.
She graduated from Concord High School in 1943 and the Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. Eleanor worked as a registered nurse at Taunton State Hospital, Emerson Hospital, Henry Heywood Hospital and Gardner Manor Nursing Home. She retired in 1986. At various times in her career she also did private duty nursing.
Her husband, Walfred G. Erickson predeceased her in 1989 after 42 years of marriage. Her brother and sister, Charles Shay and Dorothy Lozier also predeceased her. She is survived by three sons; Brian Erickson and his wife Carol of Hubbardston; former Mayor Stephen Erickson and his wife Janet of Sterling; Police Chief Neil Erickson and his wife Dawn of Gardner; and one "adopted" daughter; Jacqueline Gallant of Gardner. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Heidi Korhonen, Tammi Malloy, Ryan Erickson, Shauna Keefe, Christopher Anderson, Marika Robinson and 10 great grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Calling hours are at the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon Street, Gardner, MA from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, Oct. 29. A Mass of Holy Communion will be celebrated at St. Paul's Church, 79 Cross Street, Gardner, MA, at 11:00am on Saturday, October 30. Burial will be private at a later date.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the On-Site Academy, P.O. Box 1031, Gardner MA 01440, where Eleanor volunteered for many years, or St. Paul's Church, 79 Cross Street, Gardner, MA 01440, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and taught Sunday School.
