ATHOL - On Valentine’s Day morning Elizabeth “Tip” Ellen (Cutter) Chiasson left us to join her sweetheart and husband of over 75 years, Fabian Chiasson who passed away on June 27, 2017. Tip died surrounded by her family in her childhood home as gently and peacefully as she lived her whole life. She was born on January 9, 1922 to Alfred and Marion (Frye) Cutter. Promising her father that she wouldn’t get married until she was at least 20 years old, Tip and Fabe were married the day after that birthday and celebrated their 75th anniversary in January of 2017.
Tip attended and graduated from Athol schools (class of 1939) and at various times in her life was employed as an assembler at L. S. Starrett Company, an aide at the former Fleetwood Nursing Home and as a private caregiver to several elderly folks, but her primary roles, and ones she did exceptionally, were as wife to Fabe and mother to their 4 children. Tip was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athol (now the Athol-Orange Baptist Church) and was a woman of deep faith and conviction. For many years she was a member of that church’s FaHoLo group, the Missionary Society, and Adult Fellowship. She was also a member of Eastern Star and a Cub Scout den mother in Pack 38.
Many things gave Tip pleasure such as watching sunsets with her sister-in-law Margaret Cutter from a bench on the edge of Packard’s Pond, going to the ocean, picnics anywhere at any time, attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, holding babies, doing crafts with Carole, and spending time with members of her family, especially the little ones, and she was the best baby-sitter the world has ever seen, not outdone even by Mary Poppins!
Left behind to miss her greatly are her children, Nancy Tatro, David Chiasson, William Chiasson and Carole (Larry) Vaidulas; her grandchildren Christopher (Ali Kaplan) Tatro, Andrew (Andee Rasheeda Browne-Tatro), Jonathan Chiasson, Kathryn (Jerod) Vaidulas Hayes, and Brian Vaidulas; her great-grandchildren Julian, Elizabeth “Lizzy” and Brian Tatro, sister-in-law Margaret Cutter, and last but by no means least, her beloved cat Frank. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. Tip was predeceased by her parents, husband Fabian, sister Eleanor Watts, brothers Ralph, Kenneth and Donald Cutter and son-in-law Marshall (Mike) Tatro for whom she cared during his final illness when she was 92 years old.
Heartfelt thanks and gratitude are extended to the Gardner VNA staff, visiting nurses, aides and therapists who gave Tip such wonderful care at home, to the police, fire, EMT and Athol ambulance personnel who were always there when needed with compassion and friendliness, and to the staff at Athol Hospital who all gave her excellent care, comfort, treatment and dignity.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road in Orange. Private burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made in Tip’s memory to the Athol Animal Control, 450 Thrower Road, Athol MA.
