Elizabeth L. (McHarg) Lilley, 94, of Vero Beach, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on April 12, after a long struggle with respiratory illness. She was born December 23, 1923 to Marguerite (Scott) and Earl L. McHarg. She spent her childhood in Groveton, N.H.

Elizabeth graduated from Groveton High School in 1941. She attended Northampton Commerical College and moved to Athol in 1942, where she met and married Charles A Lilley. Betty worked at area Athol banks, before being appointed Tax Collector for the Town of Athol. She retired after twenty years with the distinction of being the first accredited female tax collector in MA.
Elizabeth was a member of the Mt. Grace chapter of AARP, serving as secretary and also a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was also active in the Athol Quota Club.
During her retirement, Elizabeth volunteered at the Athol Memorial Hospital's gift shop. She enjoyed crafts, family activities and travel. |
Elizabeth resided the last two years at a senior facility in Vero Beach, Florida, near her son, Jeff and his wife Nancy.
She leaves a daughter; Sharlene Baker of Orange, MA., son; Jefferey Lilley and his wife, Nancy of Vero Beach, FL., stepson; Richard Sutherland of Merrimack, MA. Stepdaughter; Sandra Cronin of Rutland MA. As well as eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Elizabeth was predeceased by Charles in 2010 after 67 years of marriage. A daughter, Sharon Eklund passed in 1983. Her brother Linwood McHarg and stepbrother Earl Elliott predeceased her also.
Betty's presence in our lives will be greatly missed.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate her life at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home. Reverend Edward Boren will officiate. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place a later date.
