Elizabeth A. Gagnon
Athol – Elizabeth A. (Waters) “Betty†Gagnon, 82, of 307 Intervale Avenue, died peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Heywood Hospital in Gardner surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born in Orange, Massachusetts, December 1, 1930, the daughter of Herbert P. and Eudora (Roche) Waters. She grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School with honors in 1948 and has resided in Athol since 1955.
Betty worked for Dr. Robert Knight for 25 years, retiring in 1993. She had previously worked at Batch’s Restaurant in Orange for 25 years and also was an x-ray technician at Franklin County Public Hospital.
She was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church where she taught CCD classes and was a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the former Holy Family League of Charity and the St. Mary’s Women’s Club. Additionally, she was very involved in Restorative Justice for many years, which is a program that focuses on the victims, the offenders, and the community.
She leaves her husband Richard J. Gagnon who she married October 13, 1951. They recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary. She leaves her four children; Peter Gagnon and his wife Julie (Kamila) of Westminister, Mark Gagnon and his wife Pamela (Corriveau) of Athol, Nancy Gagnon and her husband Robert Burch of Putney, VT and John Gagnon and his wife Patricia (Colbourn) of Arnold, MD; nine grandchildren, Marcie, Kristie, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Caitlin, Ryan, Anna, Isabella and Jack. She also leaves five great grandchildren, Gabriella, Julianna, Tyler, Makayla and Nathaniel and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister Nancy and a brother Franklin.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol with the Rev. Fr. Krzysztof Korcz, pastor officiating. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Betty’s name to Our Father’s Table or Father Joseph Marcotte Scholarship Fund, both in c/o Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol, MA 01331.
