On August 22, 2009, Mrs. Ellen Steiner, of State Road, Phillipston, passed away at the age of 88 after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer at the home of her daughter, Ms. Emilie Clifford.
Born Ellen Agnes Tonjes in the Bronx, New York, on April 24, 1921, she attended Queens Borough schools. Before World War II, she worked for Bulova Watch Company in NYC. She married Walter Steiner in 1943 and they left New York and moved to Royalston and then Phillipston, where they made their home on Lincoln Road for many years. After a fire in 1965, they relocated to State Road. Walter predeceased her after 53 years of marriage in 1996.
They had three children, Captain Walter K. Steiner, USN (Ret.) of Mclean, Virginia, Peter J. Steiner (who deceased in 1962 at the age of sixteen) and Emilie A. (Steiner) Clifford of Athol. She leaves five grandchildren, Kelli, Aaron, Brandon, D'Arcy and Erik, and four great-grandchildren, Hanna, Jarrett, Dylan, and Eli. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Edward, and sister, Anna.
Ellen worked the second shift for over twenty years at Erving Paper Mill, retiring in 1983. She will always be remembered for her optimism and sound advice as well as her ever cheerful and loving appreciation of all around her. She will be deeply missed by the many that had the joy to know her.
No calling hours are scheduled.
A graveside Memorial Service at the Warwick Cemetery family burial plot will be scheduled at a future date to be announced.
