He was born in Northampton County, PA, July 9, 1936, to Elmer A. and Mabel H. Dech. Certified in addiction medicine, he served as the Medical Director of the Naukeag Hospital, Ashburnham, MA, and later joined the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic in Keene, NH, practicing there until he retired in 2001.
Always preferring to be busy and productive, Elmer spent his retirement volunteering to help others, traveling every year to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. He got great satisfaction from spending time with his family, assisting others with yard work, and getting together with friends for golf, bowling, or playing cards.
