Ernest R ."Red" Maynard, 97, of Ashburnham, MA, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025.
Born in South Ashburnham on March 17, 1927, he was the son of the late Ernest I. and Myrtle (Russell) Maynard. Red was a humble and hard working man who dedicated his life to his family and to the service of his community and country. He was a veteran of World War II serving honorably in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater. His unwavering loyalty made him a respected member of the VFW Post 5509 and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 142 Thomas P. Sweeney, where he served as Past Commander. An embodiment of the Scout Law, Red earned the esteemed level of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Red was a businessman, a skilled craftsman and tool maker for the woodworking industry. He owned and operated Maynard Machine Tool Company for over four decades. He also served on the Town Advisory Board for Ashburnham for five years and held the position of Water Commissioner for 20 years. His dedication to his hometown was unwavering, and his contributions to the community will be remembered.
In his younger days Red enjoyed the outdoors with family, hunting, fishing, boating and water skiing. He also liked playing cards and board games with family and friends. Later in life he took pleasure in the pastime of jigsaw puzzles.
Red was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruby (Hicks) Maynard, by his son, Peter R. Maynard, his parents, Ernest I. and Myrtle R. Maynard, and his sister, Janice Segnan.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Michelle Maynard, and her husband David J. Chase of Westminster.
Funeral services and burial will be private.
