ORANGE - Eugene A. DePratti, 83 of 383 East River Street, Orange formerly of Athol, died Sunday, January 1, 2012 in the Athol Memorial Hospital, Athol.
He was born in Athol, on April 20, 1928, the son of the late Alexander and the late Rosanna (Goguen) DePratti.
Eugene grew up in Orange and graduated from Orange High School with the Class of 1947.
Mr. DePratti served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He operated DePratti's Package Store in Athol during the 1950's. In 1960 he joined the Athol Police Department and was a on the force until his retirement in 1982 as a Sergeant.
He went on to work for the Erving Post Office for 10 years and retired in 1992. He was a Deputy Sheriff for the Worcester County Sheriffs Office for many years.
He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church for many years and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting and vegetable gardening. He was a "Cowboy at Heart" he could make anything and loved woodworking. An avid sports fan he loved the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, he also enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events near and far. As part of his gardening skills he was known for cultivating Italian Beans from Italy and sharing them with family and friends.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Ermalene T. (LeBlanc) DePratti; four daughters, Deborah J. DePratti of Rutland, Renee M. Lauriat and her husband James R. of Greenfield, Theresa A. Dodge and her husband Dana E. of Erving, Susan E. Maguire and her husband Frederick L. of Orange; one son, Timothy M. DePratti of Newton; one brother, Norman DePratti of Peterborough, NH; a sister in-law, Elaine Bartus of Orange; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Lauriat) Trembley, Ryan J. Lauriat, Elizabeth (Maguire) Buccaroni, Christopher D. Dodge, Sarah (Lauriat) Clary, Jennifer Dodge, Luci Maguire; 5 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother, Roland DePratti, and by his sister, Lita DePratti.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will be private at a later date.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P. O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.
