Athol - Eunice S. Small 86 of 89 Lake Ellis Road Athol died Friday April 6, 2007 at Athol Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Malden on December 11, 1920, the daughter of the late James and Mary Quirk Scanlan. She grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School.
She moved with her family to Royalston in 1949 where her husband, Harold Small was the manager of Tully Dam. Upon his retirement in 1972, they moved to Athol.
Mrs. Small retired in 1986 from Athol Memorial Hospital where she managed the Admissions Office. After retiring she worked for the Department of Commerce conducting consumer price index interviews. She worked as a census taker. Prior to her career at Athol Memorial Hospital she worked in the credit department of W. T. Grant's, Western Union, Royalston Post Office and as a cook at Raymond School in Royalston.
Mrs. Small was active member of the Athol Women's Club, Athol Golden Agers, AARP, Daughters of Isabella, Royalston Grange, Athol Bird and Nature Club, Athol Hospital Retirees and the Athol Hospital Auxiliary. She was a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol.
Mrs. Small was the widow of Harold A. Small and leaves behind four children: Diane Bennett and her husband Harold of Manassas, Virginia, Ruth Gilmour and her husband Wayne of Peabody, Massachusetts, David H. Small and his fiance Shelley Hight of Athol, Massachusetts and Donald J. Small of Providence, Rhode Island, six grandchildren, Katherine Gilmour of Danvers, Paul Gilmour of Salem, Christine Jeffers of Warrenton, Virginia, Michael Blain of Westampton, NJ, James Blain of Muskegon, MI, and Sean Bennett of Manassas, VA, eight great-grandchildren: Sarah, Bradley, and Ashley Jeffers of Warrenton, VA, Daniel, Jason, and Amanda Blain of Westampton, NJ, Kaitlyn and Cameron Blain of Muskegon, MI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol, MA. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Calling hours will held Monday, April 9, 2007 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street, Athol.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Athol Memorial Hospital Auxiliary 2033 Main St., Athol, MA 01331.
