The Sisters of the Assumption mourn the loss of Sister Evelyn R. Brault, formerly known as Sister Gerard-Marie who died peacefully at Marie Esther Heath Center in Marlborough, MA on Thursday, January 21, 2021. She was born on June 10, 1925 in Chicopee Falls, MA, the third child of Philias J. Brault and Aline (Remillard) Brault.
Sr. Evelyn joined the Sisters of the Assumption on August 21, 1950. Soon after her religious profession, she taught at Maria Assumpta Academy in Petersham, MA for two years. For the next thirty years, from 1955 to 1985, she was in Japan as a missionary, during which time she was Principal and an English teacher at the high school level in Urawa for three years. She then became President of the newly founded Jr. College in Aomori, and assumed the function of Director of Formation. From 1985 to 1991, Sr. Evelyn was Superior of the USA Province of her Congregation and from 1995 to 2000 she served as a General Counselor. Following her many assignments, she generously responded to another call namely that of secretary and translator for the International Union of Major Superiors in Rome, Italy, a function she carried out with dignity and professionalism for seven years. Sr. Evelyn was a very competent, gracious and well-spoken woman who was an educator par excellence. She spent her last four years engaged in the ministry of prayer at Marie Esther Health Center where she received wonderful care.
Sr. Evelyn is survived by her sister-in-law, Jeanne Brault, several nieces and nephews, as well as the Sisters of the Assumption worldwide. Her sisters, Irene Harrell and Cecile Brault, and her brother Gerard predeceased her.
Sr. Evelyn will lay to rest in East Street Cemetery, Petersham on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
