ATHOL - Frances M. (Costello) Hathaway, 90, of 60 West Chestnut St., died Saturday, April 12, 2003 in Athol Memorial Hospital, following an illness.
Her husband of 54 years, Duane Hathaway, died in 1982. She leaves two daughters, Dolly Gallien of Claremont, N.H. and Frances St. Laurent and her husband Elmer, of Orange; a close family friend, David Flint of Orange; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Duane Hathaway, Jr., who died in 1989.
She was born in Au Sable Forks, N.Y., on June 3, 1912, a daughter of Alfred and Grace Costello, and was raised and attended schools in Lake Placid, N.Y. She had resided in Athol the past 61 years.
Mrs. Hathaway was a chambermaid at the former Pequoig Hotel in Athol for several years. She then worked for N.D. Cass Toy Company and the former J. F. MacElwain Shoe Company, before retirement. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Throughout the area, she was affectionately known as "Mother Hathaway." She enjoyed playing cards and watching television. At one time, she and her husband designed and sewed finger puppets for children having blood work done at Athol Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, with Rev. John Leahy officiating. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
