ATHOL - Francis C. Gallien, 88, of 26 Summit Avenue, Athol, died Monday, April 20, 2009 in the Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol. He was born in Athol on May 12, 1920, the son of Maxim and Mary (Hachey) Gallien. Mr. Gallien grew up in Athol and attended local schools, graduating from Athol High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked for the former Union Twist Drill Company several years ago. Mr. Gallien married Marie E. Mallett on June 9, 1959 at Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol. Mr. Gallien was a member of the Athol Rod and Gun Club, the Franco-American Naturalization Club, the Lithuanian Naturalization Club, and the Athol Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed visiting his friends in Canada and going to barbeques. He appreciated nature and enjoyed the outdoors, spending his spare time fishing Boston and gardening. He especially enjoyed sitting on his porch watching the birds and squirrels. He leaves his wife of 49 years, Marie E. (Mallett) Gallien of Athol; his daughter, Doreen Gallien of Athol; his step-son, Robert Boucher of Athol; two sisters, Bertha Gallien of Orange, Yvonne Cassin of New Hampshire; three brothers, Armand Gallien, Wilfred Gallien, Emile Gallien of Maine; one grandchild, Michelle Gallien of Athol; two step-grandchildren, Danny Boucher of Texas, Lianna Davis of Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Gallien, and by three brothers, John Gallien, Arthur Gallien, Edward Gallien. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. in the Gethsemane Cemetery, Daniel Shays Highway, Athol. There are no calling hours.
