ATHOL - Frederick John Leavitt, 81 passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Kindred Hospital – Parkview, Leicester after a short illness.
He was born in Winchendon on September 27, 1931, son of Thomas A. and Emma M. (McLean) Leavitt.
Fred; as he liked to be called, grew up and lived in Athol all his life. He was in the National Guard as a young man. He worked at N. D. Cass for a short time. He then worked at J F. McElwains for 31 years. He retired from L. S. Starrett Co. in 1998 having worked there for 17 years.
Fred was a happy man who was a kid at heart and enjoyed life. He loved to tell jokes and to hear them. He loved his family and his grandchildren, and loved to vacation with them. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards. He participated in numerous cribbage tournaments in South Athol, having won several times. He also enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.
He leaves three sons: Joseph Leavitt and his wife Donna, Thomas Leavitt and his wife Jacinta, Michael Leavitt and his wife Melinda; one daughter: Louise Daub and her husband Jeffrey, all of Athol; six grandchildren: Matthew Leavitt, Amanda Leavitt, Jennifer Leavitt and Michelle, Leavitt all of Athol, Stephanie Blattenberger of Marlborough, Sarah Eskildsen of Shirley; one great grandson: Isaac Dodge of Athol. He also leaves Marjorie Ralys, his lady friend and companion.
He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years: Hazel M. (Rayner) Leavitt who died in 1996; a sister: Cecilia Norscow, and two step-brothers: Arthur Leavitt and Elmer Leavitt.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 10:00 am in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Rev. Mark Bariloni will officiate the ceremony. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
