ASHBURNHAM- George Hietala, 76, of Ashburnham, died Saturday, February 3, in his home after an illness.
He was born February 22, 1941, in Gardner, son of the late Kasper and Helmi (Anderson) Hietala. George was a 1959 graduate of Gardner High School. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He retired in 2001 after working at Simplex Time Recorder for 36 years.
George was a proud American. He was a dedicated sports fan of the Patriots, Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins. He also enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball. George had a soft spot for animals, mostly for his dog, Buffy. He loved bird feeding and watching. George could often be found outside working and playing with his “toys”. He loved spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a joker, good friend, and neighbor.
He leaves his wife of 47 years, Elaine M. (Charland) Hietala; his son, Kenneth G. E. Hietala of Ashburnham; and his best friend, Rob.
George was predeceased by his daughter, Tracey E. Hietala in 1989, two brothers, William in 1997 and Donald in 1975.
The funeral will be held Friday, February 9, at 12:00 Noon at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon. There are no calling hours.
