Athol – George A. “Pooh†Terrien, 65, of Pequoig Ave., died Saturday, May 2, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
George was born in Gardner, MA, May 27, 1949, the son of Edgar and Aurore (Paquet) Terrien. He grew up and has lived in Athol all of his life, graduating from Athol High School in 1967 and from Mt. Wachusett Community College with a degree in Fire Science.
George served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, National Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Markman’s Badge.
George was a firefighter for the Athol Fire Department – shift four from 1973 until 2002, retiring as Captain. He also worked for Mann Lumber for many years, Hamshaw Lumber for several years and also drove the local transportation bus.
He was a member of the Athol American Legion Post #102, the Franco-American Naturalization Club and the Marine Corps League. He enjoyed woodworking, trains, traveling, listening to Harry Chapin, watching the Three Stooges, enjoying a Miller Light, but most especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.
His wife of 39 years, Louise A. (Hickey) Terrien died in 2012. He leaves two daughters, Melinda Bowler and her husband William of Athol and Viki LaRoche and her significant other Leland Der of Orlinda, TN; a son, George L. Terrien and his wife Christy of Suffolk, VA; seven grandchildren, Desiree Terrien and her significant other Michael Whelan, Tom Parker, Jr., Mariah Weselovs and her husband Nicholas, Charlie and Eathan Terrien, Janna LaRoche and Ariel Garnet; a great granddaughter, Emmi Decoteau and many brother and sister-in-laws.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2015 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. Burial with military honors will be held this summer at a date to be announced at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Cemetery in Winchendon.
