George A. Wesockes, 84, of 169 South Athol Rd., died on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center - Campus, Worcester, following an illness.
Born in Athol on Sept. 7, 1919 a son of Anthony and Elizabeth Wesockes. He grew in Athol and attended school there before joining the United States Army.
During his service in the United States Army, he served during World War II before being honorably discharged and returning to Athol.
He was married to Helen (Zielenski) on Aug. 16, 1948 and enjoyed 55 years of marriage together.
He was self employed and ran Doyles Pool Hall for many years. He previously had worked for several local restaurants including Carbone's and The Puriden.
A beloved husband and loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed fishing and was an avid sports fan and went to watch many of his grandchildren's sports. An enthusiastic gardener, he took much pride in growing his own seedlings in later winter in his home and was proud of his flower garden in front of his home, especially in the Spring with the bountiful tulips blossoming.
He also was a kind and generous man who helped many in the community without seeking rewards for himself.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Helen; two sons, George A. Wesockes, and his wife Bonnie, of Templeton and Charles Wesockes of Athol; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Wesockes of Athol; grandchildren, Timothy Wesockes of Rhode Island and Athol, Crystal Wesockes of Boston and Athol, Kaitlain Maybey of Athol, and Kelly Jones of Fitchburg; three sisters, Pauline Rodski of Gardner, Tina Kania of Athol, and Ellie Thompson of Athol; numerous nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas and daughters, Patricia, and Jacqueline.
Funeral services will be held from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, , 137 Main St., with a mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Church, 105 Main St., on Monday, Feb. 2, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Jamie Callahan will officiate. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday, Feb. 2, from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
