GARDNER - Grace L. Carbone, 86 of 11 Margaret Street, Gardner, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, September 5, 2011 in the Heywood Hospital, Gardner.
She was born in Gardner, on July 15, 1925, the daughter of the late John B. and the late Adeline (Gardella) Carbone.
Grace was a 1943 graduate of Gardner High School; she attended Boston University and graduated with highest honors in 1949. She received advance degrees from Trinity College in Hartford, CT and from the University of Connecticut.
Her distinguished teaching career began at Cushing Academy and continued to Connecticut where she mentored generations of students and chaired the business department at Rockville High School.
Grace was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, a member and past president of the Ladies of Columbus in Rockville, Ct; past treasurer of the Vernon Teachers Association; a member of the Salary Negotiation Committee for the Vernon Teachers Association; a member of the Connecticut Teachers Association; a life member of the Retired Teachers Association of Connecticut; very active in the Vernon League of Woman Voters; member of the AARP; member of the Gardner Woman's Club and chairperson for the scholarship committee for many years.
Grace leaves her sister, Mrs. Doris C. Norskey and her husband Dr. Alexander P. Norskey of Gardner; four nieces and seven great nieces and nephews.
The family will gather to celebrate Grace's life on Thursday, September 8, 2011, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Gardner.
A calling hour will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011, from 12 - 1:15 p.m. in the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner.
Following the burial, friends and family are invited back to the home of Alex and Doris Norskey on Bickford Hill Road in Gardner.
