ATHOL - Guido A. Polana, 81 of 556 Pinedale Ave., Athol, died peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at St. Vincent's Hospital, Worcester. He was born in Windber, Pennsylvania, on December 20, 1927, the son of the late Baptista and the late Maria (Pizzini) Polana. Guido grew up in Pennsylvania with his brother Enzio and his two sisters Nelly and Annie. He enlisted and served in the United States Army after his high school graduation. He served at the end of World War II in the Philippines as a fireman. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, he moved back to Athol, where he met his wife Beverly and has resided ever since. Guido was most known for being a family man and putting his family first. He was a fabulous husband and an outstanding father. If you asked Beverly, she will tell you that, "you couldn't ask for a better man, being genuine, honest, and loving." They were married August 7th, 1948 at Our Lady Immaculate Church and just recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Guido worked for the L. S. Starrett Tool Company for thirty-three years choosing to stay close, enabling him to devote his energy and time to his wife and eleven children. He retired on February 1, 1990. He was an active member of Our Lady Immaculate Church and a devoted catholic. He would tell you right from wrong but never judge and taught all his children to be strong, independent, hard working, and respectful to all. Guido leaves his wife of 61 years, Beverly B. (Timmins) Polana and his eleven children. He and Beverly have three daughters; Kathryn DeCoteau, Carol Calcari, Lisa Rhodes and her husband Micheal. He will greatly miss his grandchildren from his daughters: Shaun, Matthew, and Katie Calcari, Loki and Cordelia Rhodes. They also have eight sons; Guido Polana and his wife Sharon, John Polana, Michael Polana, Joseph Polana and his wife Maureen, Tom Polana, James Polana and his wife Julia, Andrew Polana and his wife Jane, Kenneth Polana and his wife Tammy. He will also greatly miss his grandchildren from his sons who are: Elizabeth and Gina Polana, Gregg and Tracy Polana, Melissa Polana-Lanier, Brady, and Jessica Polana, Lauren Polana, Jennifer and Anthony Polana, Marissa and Jim Polana, Tia and Tasha Polana. Guido leaves his five great grandchildren who are Taylor Pickering, Quentin and Reilly Polana, Lucia Lanier, and her soon to be here baby brother. He also leaves his two sisters, Nellie Ambrose and her son David, Annie Ramsdell and her children Gene, Larry, and Scott. He leaves his nieces and nephews; the late John Amistadi, Ricky, Gary, Denise, and Chris Amistadi. Guido was predeceased by his brother, Enzio Amistadi. At Guido's request, calling hours will be private for immediate family and close relatives on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol. Family and friends are encouraged to attend his funeral service on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, to pay their final respects. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Our Lady Immaculate Church Building Fund, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331. $(document).ready(function(){ });
