Helen J. Maga

ATHOL- Helen J. Maga, 93, of 46 Lenox Circle, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Athol Hospital. She was born in Sunderland on June 3, 1922, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Danilo) Korpita. She attended Sunderland schools. Helen married Henry Maga in 1946 and they welcomed two children. Wanting to pursue a nursing career, Helen attended the Pittsfield School of Nursing, now known as the Berkshire Medical Center, where she received her training. Helen worked at Athol Memorial Hospital, as a nurse, spanning four decades; the 1950's through the late 1980's. She worked in surgery, intensive care and the second floor. Helen's greatest joy was caring for others. Helen was proud of her brothers who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, they were John, Michael, Peter and Edward Korpita. Michael was killed in action in the Pacific Theater. Helen was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church. Helen liked watching golf tournaments, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV and over the years attended many games at Fenway Park. She was thrilled to meet Ted Williams in Florida in 1990. Helen participated in several bowling leagues during her working career. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and would challenge herself to find the most difficult puzzles to complete. Helen read at least three newspapers a day. She loved spending time with her family, especially her great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking on holidays. Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by Henry Maga, her husband of 30 years, five brothers, three sisters and several close friends. She leaves a son, Jon Maga of Boston and Athol, a daughter, Marianne Bialobrzewski of Athol, three grandchildren, Shane and Toby Bialobrzewski of Athol, Tennille Bialobrzewski of Gardner, two great grandchildren, Alexis Bialobrzewski of Athol and Madilyn LeBlanc of Gardner, a sister, Veronica Wroblewski of Arizona and many nieces and nephews. Services and interment will be private under the direction of Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Our Lady Immaculate Church Building Fund, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.
