ATHOL - Henry L. "Hank" Homon, 93 of 192 Green St., Athol, died Sunday, January 24, 2010 in the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Templeton.
He was born in Athol, on July 24, 1916, the son of the late Louis and the late Selina (Thomas) Homon. He was the ninth of ten children.
A 1936 graduate of Athol High School, he retired from the Union Twist Drill (Litton Co.) in1979 after 40 years and was owner of the H.L. Homon Sporting Goods Store for 20 years. A talented baseball catcher, Mr. Homon tried out for the Connie Mack Philadelphia Athletics, played for the semi-pro Lebadon Cardinals from1945-1950, and continued to play baseball and softball for several Athol industrial teams. He also played semi-pro hockey for the former Lakeside A.C. for many years.
Mr. Homon was one of three who received the original national charter for the Athol YMCA Babe Ruth League, and was a Babe Ruth coach for 20 years. Mr. Homon served as president for the Athol Kiwanis Club, the Athol Boosters' Association and the Athol Golden Agers, and was an AARP member. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church.
At one time, Mr. Homon owned racehorses, which became a hobby for him. He enjoyed planting a yearly vegetable garden, was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles.
He was predeceased by his wife Frances M. (Osedavich) Homon who died in 2005.
He leaves two daughters: Jean Fisher and her husband Alexander of Milford, CT, Helen Homon and Harvey Berig of Elkridge, MD; one son: John Homon and his wife Kathleen (Wilson) Homon of Alliance, OH; two grandchildren: Kurt Fisher and his wife Meredyth of Cape Cod, Kristen Fisher of Bayonne, NJ; a great granddaughter: Ruby May Fisher; a niece: Pat Shatos of Athol; two great nieces: Shelley Reidy and her husband Joseph of Westminster and Shannon Swift and her husband Bill of Munson, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 29, 2010 at 10:30 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Baldwinville Nursing Home Activity Fund, P.O. Box 24, Baldwinville, MA 01436-0024.
